Richmond, VA (May 2008) - Obtuse Software, LLC (www.obtusesoft.com) is pleased to announce the official release of zigGIS 2.0. ZigGIS 2.0 is the well-known extension to ESRI's ArcMap for connecting directly to PostGIS databases with ArcMap. Version 2.0 introduces improvements in speed and stability as well as support for editing of PostGIS data using native ArcMap editing tools.
Obtuse has focused a great deal of effort on improving connection times and drawing speeds as compared to older versions of zigGIS. Additionally, Obtuse also focused on improving spatial reference support, specifically in the area of synchronizing spatial references between ArcGIS and PostGIS. Users of zigGIS 2.0 should notice improved support for the native on-the-fly reconciliation of spatial references within ArcMap as well as greatly improved performance with large PostGIS data sets.
PostGIS data editing is also introduced with zigGIS 2.0. ZigGIS includes workflow tools to allow a user to check out features from PostGIS, perform edits using the native ArcMap editor, and then check the newly created or modified features back into PostGIS. This enables the use of advanced ArcMap editing tools for the maintenance of PostGIS data.
ZigGIS enables this direct read and edit capability without the need for any additional middleware. Users with a valid ArcView license or above may connect directly to a PostGIS database. Once connected, the user may utilize ArcGIS Desktop to visualize and analyze the PostGIS data as well as produce sophisticated cartographic products. Finally, the same user can create and edit PostGIS data from within ArcMap. This capability is available to users of ArcView, ArcEditor or ArcInfo.
ZigGIS is ideal for small to mid-sized sites that currently use ArcGIS Desktop but may be seeking a low-cost solution to centralizing their spatial data. It is also ideal for sites that are currently using PostGIS in conjunction with an open-source server stack but want to take advantage of ArcMap for analysis or cartographic production. ZigGIS 2.0 is a cost-effective way to bridge the gap in either of these cases.
ZigGIS 2.0 can be purchased online at the Obtuse Software online store. An evaluation version will be available in the very near future.
